How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on IceboxPicks starts with one question: will this freezer fit your space and hold what you need?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the size

Chest freezers are sold by cubic feet, from small 3.5 cu ft models to large ones over 10 cu ft. We check the capacity and outside size each maker lists, so you know what fits your space.

When a freezer is sold for garages, we check the temperature range the maker gives for it. "Garage ready" is the maker's term, so we say whose claim it is.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at capacity, outside size, baskets, the defrost drain, the temperature control and power use. We also note the certifications and warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like dents from shipping, a loud hum or frost that builds up fast.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A freezer that's great for a hunter's garage may score lower in a guide for a small apartment.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every freezer we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. Follow it for setup, temperature and power, and follow food safety guidance for what you store.
